World's End Lodge, Haldummulla.

Location: Lower Ohiya, Haldummulla, Sri Lanka.

If you want to indulge your senses among the clouds; let your mind be free from the rest of the world, then World’s End Lodge would be the ideal haven for you. Truly this is the tranquility at its best.

"Eagle's Nest"

Located on a historic hiking trail leading to the Horton plains and upper Ohiya area, this hotel gives the distinctive opportunity of exploring the nature as well as relaxing your weary body and mind. Being a hotel at an altitude of approximately 1270 m, the climate is always cool and refreshing. On a bright sunny day with deep blue skies, you can see miles and miles into the horizon. However, still there is a high chance that you are engulfed with mist within a matter of minutes.

There are two main buildings at the World’s End Lodge in which the accommodation is provided. Among them the “Eagle’s Nest” is quite special with newer spacious rooms and a great panoramic view.

Turning point at the A4 road...

Another notable feature of this hotel is the swimming pool which is directly fed by the streams. It is very seldom to find a swimming pool situated in such a unique setting within Sri Lanka. Although, it is way cooler than an average pool, a daring swimmer should not miss this opportunity to have a dip.

For those who love trekking, you have the opportunity to take hikes up to the Bambarakanda Falls and even to Horton Plains National Park from the World’s End Lodge. For those who are less adventurous, you can easily visit a stream with a waterfall quite nearby.

Getting There…
On the way through pine scented path...

Finding your way to World’s End Lodge is quite simple.

  1. When travelling along the Colombo-Rathnapura-Wellawaya-Batticalao (A4) Road, you will find Ginigathgala Kirimatiya Road in front of the Walhaputhenna Central College right next to the 175 km post. (This point is 18.4 km from the Belihuloya Rest House towards Beragala, and is just 5.8 km from the Beragala Junction.)
  2. Turn to the Ginigathgala Kirimatiya Road and continue for 2.7 km until you come to a Y-junction.
  3. Take the fork to your right and continue uphill for another 1.7 km until you reach the hotel.

Note that, you would gain an elevation of almost 300 m from the A4 road to the hotel and the road conditions might not be always good. Therefore, make sure that your vehicle is fit enough to take up the challenge.

Travel Notes

Following are based on the visit to the World's End Lodge on 2011-11-10.

  • The swimming pool was very clean and chlorine-less (although it looks green). Of course, the water gets quite cold at times (specially in the afternoon), so it is better to try out the pool early in the morning.
  • Condition of the road leading to the hotel was not great. First 2.5 km to 3 km were average. However, after that the drive got a bit rough since the road had been washed away in places. However, even a car with average ground-clearance could pass through if you drive carefully.
  • Service was fairly good and the staff was quite friendly and helpful.
  • A room in the old building...
  • When it comes to cleanliness, there were some issues specially in the room we received. For an example, it looked as if the room was not made up recently and the bed spreads were not clean enough.
  • Food was quite good and plentiful although there was not much variation.
  • The location is great for relaxing and be with the nature.
