Dummala Falls (Dummala Ella)

Location: Dummala Ella, Bulathkohupitiya, Sri Lanka.

Dummala Ella is a 5m-tall, beautiful waterfall located closer to Bulathkohupitiya, Sri Lanka.

Earlier this area had been called Katuhena, and therefore the waterfall had been known as Katuhena Ella as well. The stream on which the waterfall is located, eventually joins Kelani River.

According to folklore, King Walagamba (c. 103 BC – 88 BC) is stated to have sought refuge in the nearby forests after being defeated in a battle. The king is said to have washed his plate in this stream. Even now, on full-moon days a golden plate is believed to be seen floating on this stream.

Many varieties of rare plants including different species of ferns can be seen around this area. At present, Dummala Ella has faced the threat of drying out due to deforestation.

Getting There…

This waterfall can be reached by travelling along the Dedugala Road (B67) and turning off at Doolgala.

  1. When coming from Bulathkohupitiya you need to travel 2.9 km along the Dedugala Road (B67) to reach Doolgala.
  2. Turn right to the road towards Narangala Primary School and continue for 1.8 km.
  3. You will reach an old building (a storeroom) to your right.
  4. Take the footpath to your right running next to the old building, and walk about 300 m through the rubber plantation to reach the waterfall.

Travel Notes

Following are based on the visit to Dummala Ella on 2018-12-16.

  • Good drivable road conditions upto Doolgala and fairly good upto the start of the footpath.
  • By continuing another 200 m from the old building, you may find sufficient parking space by the road.)
  • Since there were not any signboards, it was challenging to find the location.
  • The stretch along the footpath is flat mostly, and not difficult.
