Madunagala Holiday Bungalow

Location: Mahapelessa - Sooriyawewa, Sri Lanka.

Bungalow from the front…

Placed among vegetable nurseries and paddy fields just few hundred metres beyond the Mahapelessa Hot Water Springs, this little known holiday bungalow is an oasis for the nature-loving traveller. A stay here would give the guest a unique experience of Agro-Tourism. It is managed by the ‘Ruhunu Tourist Bureau’.

Lobby

This Bungalow has two non-A/C rooms and two A/C rooms. Each room can accommodate four people and have attached bathrooms. Apart from the main buiding there is a separately constructed "Observation Tower" having two rooms on an elevated platform, providing the guest with a wider view over the surroundings. Along with the rooms, the main building contains a lobby with a dining area and a kitchen.

If the rations can be provided, the in-house cook will prepare the meals for a larger group of visitors. For a smaller group (such as a single family), meals could be ordered for a very reasonable price (subjected to the avalability of the rations though, if you are ordering in the last minute).

Getting There…
  1. If you are coming from Embilipitiya on A18 road, turn left at the Padalangala Junction. There is a display board at the junction about the Mahapelessa Hot Water Springs. So it’s quite hard to miss the junction.
  2. Travel about 7.5 km along the Padalangala-Sooriyawewa B563 road, until you meet an IOC Petrol Shed on the left side of the road. (Condition of this stretch of the road is really good.)
  3. Just few meters passing the Petrol Shed, turn to the right. It is a tarred road of average condition.
  4. Travel about 3.5 km along the track. When you are nearing the 3.5 km stretch you will notice the building complex of the Hot Water Springs, to the left of the road beyond a paddy field. (About 500 m away).
  5. You will come to an almost T-junction where one fork would go leftwards. Turn to the left there and travel about 1 km until you get to junction with a gravel by-road leading to the right. (On the way you would pass the entrnace to the Hot Water Springs.)
  6. Turn right to the gravel road and continue for another 200 m until you come to a four-way junction. Continue straight ahead here.
  7. After continuing another 100 m you would see the Bungalow to your right.

Travel Notes

Following are based on the visit to Madunagala Holiday Bungalow on 2009-11-01.

  • The room was clean, spacious and well-furnished. However, certain items were noticed damaged, probably due to the ignorance of the guests themselves. The bathroom was in an average condition.
  • Food was pretty good, although only local dishes are available. Plus point is that most of the ingredients have been gathered from the farm around the bungalow.
  • Specially around the dawn and dusk, the area becomes swarmed with various resident and migrant birds, making this a bird-watchers’ paradise.
  • If you are lucky, you might get a glimpse of the roaming elephants specially at night, if you happen to be on the “Observation Tower” or outside. Although an electrified perimeter fence has been put up around the garden, it is always better to be cautious when going out during the night.

Dusk... an ideal time for birders!
Blue-winged Leafbird (Chloropsis cochinchinensis).
Indian Robin (Saxicoloides fulicatus).
