Madunagala Eco Agro-Tourism Village

Location: Mahapelessa - Sooriyawewa, Sri Lanka.

Traditional "watch tower" to protect crops.

As a part of the development carried out by the Ruhunu Tourist Bureau around Mahapelessa Hot Water Springs, a number of new projects are underway. One of those initiatives, is the Madunagala Eco Agro-Tourism Village. A large area spread around the hot water springs, is being restructured to depict various aspects of the traditional Sri Lankan lifestyle specially concerning agriculture.

Apart from the various types of paddy cultivated around the area number of other crops can be seen around. Interested visitors could mingle with the farmers, share the experiences and even buy certain agro-products.

Near the premises of the hot water springs, there are some minor scale attractions specially for kids, such as an aquarium, an aviary (a “birds park”) and some more cages of rabbits, giant squirrels etc. In addition to those, certain traditional transportation modes like the catamaran called “Wallama” in Sinhala, buggy cart etc. can also been seen.

A flock of Black-headed Ibis (Threskiornis melanocephalus).

The entire area would become a sanctuary for bird-lovers, as it tends to get flocked with various resident and migrant birds, specially during the dawn and dusk.
